    • Linus Torvalds Kicks Off Development of Linux Kernel 5.3 as First RC Is Out Now

Linus Torvalds has kicked off the development of the Linux 5.3 kernel series, which will be the next major Linux kernel branch to be released this fall in early September.

The two-week merge window from the Linux 5.2 kernel series, which is now ready for mass deployments, is now closed, so the development cycle of Linux kernel 5.3 has kicked off over the weekend with the first RC (Release Candidate) ready for download and testing. According to Linus Torvalds, Linux kernel 5.3 RC1 is a pretty big release, but not the biggest ever.

"This is a pretty big release, judging by the commit count. Not the biggest ever (that honour still goes to 4.9-rc1, which was exceptionally big), and we've had a couple of comparable ones (4.12, 4.15 and 4.19 were also big merge windows), but it's definitely up there," said Linus Torvalds in a mailing list announcement.

It also looks like the merge window had a "rocky start," according to Linus Torvalds, as several bugs needed to be fixed for everything to go well and release the first RC (Release Candidate) build to the public. Despite that, it would appear that the Linux 5.3 kernel series is very promising with many exciting new features and enhancements.
"Linux kernel 5.3 expected to arrive on mid-September"

If everything goes well during the development cycle, we could be able to download the final release of Linux kernel 5.3 on September 8th if there are seven Release Candidates released or September 15th if there'll be eight RCs. It all depends on the quality of code and the number of patches submitted by kernel developers.

Until then, the Linux community can help by downloading, compiling and installing the first Release Candidate of Linux kernel 5.3 and report any issues they might encounter. You can download Linux kernel 5.3 RC1 right now from kernel.org or through our free software portal, but keep in mind that this is a pre-release version, not suitable for production use.

    • VirtualBox 6.0.10 Adds UEFI Secure Boot Driver Signing Support on Ubuntu, Debian

Oracle released VirtualBox 6.0.10 as the fifth maintenance release in the latest VirtualBox 6.0 series, fixing various issues and adding some exciting enhancements for Linux users.

VirtualBox 6.0.10 comes more than two months after the previous maintenance release with some notable changes for Linux-based operating systems, especially Ubuntu and Debian GNU/Linux hosts, which received support for UEFI Secure Boot driver signing. Additionally, Linux hosts got better support for various kernels on Debian GNU/Linux and Fedora systems.

It also fixes focus grabbing issues reported by users when building VirtualBox from sources using recent versions of the Qt application framework. The Linux guests support was improved as well in this release with fixes for udev rules for guest kernel modules, which now take effect in time, and the ability to remember the guest screen size after a guest reboot.

Other than that, Linux guests will no longer load old libcrypt versions on recent guests in the Guest Additions tools. VirtualBox 6.0.10 also improves the user interface by fixing issues with inputing controller names and resize problems with recent Linux hosts. Several serial and USB problems were addressed as well in this maintenance release.
"VirtualBox 6.0.10 is now available for download"

Among other noteworthy changes included in the VirtualBox 6.0.10 maintenance release, we can mention fix for reversed reporting of audio input and output, as well as for controlling recording for running machine in VBoxManage, better support for shared folders for OS/2 guests, improved performance of the guest control service, and a handful of Windows hosts fixes.

You can download VirtualBox 6.0.10 for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows operating systems right now through our free software portal. We recommend all users running a previous version from the VirtualBox 6.0 series to update to the VirtualBox 6.0.10 release as soon as possible, and make sure you also update the Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack.

    • Samsung Galaxy Note 10 to Launch with Red and Pink Versions

Samsung’s next Galaxy Note will introduce a series of major changes versus the previous model, including new colors that will further expand the lineup.

First off, the Galaxy Note 10 family is very likely to comprise two different models. The base model will be the regular Galaxy Note 10 with model number SM-N970F, while the upgraded version will be called Galaxy Note 10 Pro and hit the shelves with model number SM-N975F.

A 5G version of the Galaxy Note 10 will also launch, but this one will be limited to markets where such network infrastructure exists.
      "New colors on the Note"

The base Galaxy Note 10 is expected to launch in black, silver, and white, but Samsung is reportedly considering other two versions as well. For example, the Note 10 could land in pink in international markets as well, but also in red in specific countries. Details on market availability aren’t known at this point.

Then, the Galaxy Note 10 Pro will also arrive black, silver, and white, so Samsung could use the new colors to set the two models apart. This means the South Koreans could use a strategy similar to the one on the Galaxy S10 where the base version is available in many more colors, including yellow.

The Galaxy Note 10 5G will most likely be sold in black, silver, and white as well, and SamMobile speculates a gold version could also land, either from the very beginning or shortly after the launch as a special edition aimed at specific markets.

Separately, a photo leaked via SlashLeaks appears to suggest that Samsung is also preparing a substantial battery capacity increase on the Galaxy Note 10. While it’s not yet clear at this point if the leak concerns the standard model or the 5G sibling, one of the two is expected to feature a 4,300 mAh battery, a welcome upgrade from 4,000 mAh on the Note 9.

    • Samsung and Huawei Settle Smartphone Patent Dispute for Our Own Good

South Korean-based phone manufacturer Samsung and China-based rival Huawei have reportedly settled their patent lawsuits after several years of legal disputes.

A report from Nikkei reveals that the settlement was mediated by the Guangdong High People’s Court in southern China and includes what’s likely to be “cross-licensing of patents tied to basic technologies.”

No specifics have been provided on these patents or basic technologies, but Samsung and Huawei working together is a big win for everybody, especially as the patents the two own can help eventually create better products from both sides.

In fact, the reason for the settlement is believed to be the two companies willing to spend the resources they would normally put in a lawsuit in other areas, including on product development. This makes sense in the long term, especially as the phone market overall fell 4.1% last year and Samsung and Huawei are currently the two largest smartphone manufacturers.
"40 lawsuits involving Huawei and Samsung"

IDC data shows that Samsung led the market last year with 20.8% share, followed by Apple with 14.9% and Huawei with 14.7%. In the meantime, Huawei managed to overtake Apple, and the company now wants to surpass Samsung in global shipments by the end of 2020.

The dispute between the two started three years ago when Huawei decided to file a lawsuit in China and the US against Samsung for what it claimed to be a violation of its 4G wireless technology. Samsung responded with a series of patent lawsuits as well, and since then, the two sued each other on several occasions. The cited source estimates Samsung and Huawei filed more than 40 lawsuits against each other since 2016.

Neither Samsung nor Huawei released a statement on this alleged settlement, but if such a confirmation is provided, there’s no doubt the most interesting part is the patent cross-licensing topic.

    • Windows 10 Mobile Receives Critical WhatsApp Security Update

If there’s anyone still running Windows 10 Mobile, they should update to the latest version of WhatsApp as soon as possible, as an emergency security patch has just been released.

Earlier this week, it was discovered that a security vulnerability in WhatsApp allowed malicious actors to spy on users using nothing more than a voice call.

Technically, because of the flaw, hackers were able to access sensitive data with a highly-complex exploit triggered with a WhatsApp call, with targets not even required to answer in order for their devices to be compromised.

Attackers were capable of accessing any data stored on the device and collecting further details like the location of the device.

WhatsApp rolled out security updates for Android and iOS on Monday after previously working around the clock to develop a patch, and now the same fix is available on Windows 10 Mobile too.
"Windows 10 Mobile going dark too"

Despite being in its final days, Windows 10 Mobile still gets its very own version of WhatsApp, so a patch for users who haven’t yet migrated to Android or iOS was necessary to stay protected against such attacks.

As per HTNovo, today’s update for WhatsApp brings the app to version 2.18.348, so you need to make sure you install this release because otherwise you’re vulnerable to attacks.

Needless to say, the impact such a vulnerability has on Windows 10 Mobile is very low, not necessarily because the platform itself comes with improved protections over other mobile operating system, but because of the small number of users still using Windows phones.

With a 0 percent market share, Windows 10 Mobile is projected to be retired in December when Microsoft will stop rolling out security updates for the platform, at which point all users will be recommended to switch to Android or iOS for continued support and app updates.

    • Samsung Ready to Give Up on 64GB Storage Option for Mobile Devices

Samsung is pushing harder for more storage on its high-end devices, as the company apparently wants 128GB to be the new default.

After giving up on the 64GB storage option on the Galaxy Note 9 and the Galaxy S10, Samsung is now gearing up to make a similar change in the tablet category as well, with a future model to start at 128GB on the base model.

A report from SamMobile notes that Samsung is currently working on two new Galaxy tablets known as SM-T860 and SM-T865 (both are variants of the same base model and come with Wi-Fi and LTE, respectively) and they could boast at least 128GB storage. The tablet is likely to be the successor to the Galaxy Tab S4 and may launch as Galaxy Tab S5.

This makes sense since it’s a tablet we’re talking about here, but the change also shows that Samsung is very committed to increasing the amount of storage offered to customers who purchase high-end devices.
"More storage on rival models too"

Samsung insisting for more storage on its high-end devices is good news not only for customers of the South Korean company, but for the entire mobile industry too, as it could force rivals to offer increased storage as well on their models.

Apple, for example, despite charging a premium for the iPhone, still sells the base model of the 2018 models with 64GB storage. iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max are all available with 64GB storage. iPhone XR starts at $749 in the United States, while the cheapest iPhone XS costs $999 with the same amount of storage.

For comparison, Samsung Galaxy S10e, which is the cheapest S10 model launched this year, can be yours for $749 with 128GB storage. The standard S10 costs $899, also with 128GB storage.

    • Samsung Phone Owners Getting Special Food at Select Restaurants

Samsung has found a pretty odd way to convince customers worldwide to purchase its devices: provide them with special dishes at select restaurants.

The most recent campaign started by the South Korean company invites Samsung phone owners in the United Kingdom to pay a visit to restaurants in the country and scan table-top codes with their mobile devices.

If they do this, they get access to secret menus which aren’t available to anyone else in the restaurant.

Bill’s, The Breakfast Club, Patty & Bun, and Pizza Pilgrims are four of the restaurants participating in the campaign, and Samsung says you can go to one or all because it’s all up to you. There’s no limitation as to how many times you can use the Samsung phone to get the special dishes.
      "Any “Galaxy device” supported"

“You’re probably here because we’ve got your taste buds tingling for something special. Bill’s, The Breakfast Club, Patty & Bun, and Pizza Pilgrims have been secretly creating some exciting dishes that only Samsung owners can get their teeth into,” the company says on the official site of the campaign.

“All you need to do is pop in to your favourite restaurant (or all of them if you prefer), find a Secret Menu, and look for an AR code. Then it’s just a case of unlocking the exclusive dishes using a Samsung phone.”

No other details have been provided on these secret menus, so you’ll have to go to the aforementioned restaurants yourselves to find out what this is all about.

Also, Samsung hasn’t shared any info on the devices that you can use for scanning the table-top codes, but the company claims any “Galaxy device” is supported, so I’m guessing you don’t have to purchase a Galaxy S10 to receive these special dishes.

    • Google Bans Huawei from Using Android, Google Play, Gmail, Other Services

Google “has suspended business” with tech giant Huawei in order to comply with an order signed by the Trump administration last week and enabling new restrictions for the Chinese firm, according to Reuters.

The said suspension includes Google blocking Huawei from using the licensed version of Android, as well as services like Google Play, Gmail, YouTube, and others.

A Google spokesperson told Reuters that the restriction only concerns new devices, while existing smartphones and tablets will continue to be allowed to run Android and connect to Google services.

“We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications,” a Google spokesperson said. “For users of our services, Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices.”

Huawei will only be able to use the public version of Android, also known as Android Open Source Project. On the other hand, the search giant will no longer provide Huawei with updates for the licensed version of Android, technical support, and any other adjacent services for its proprietary apps and services.

In a statement on Twitter, Google reiterated that existing Android devices will continue to run properly.

“For Huawei users' questions regarding our steps to comply w/ the recent US government actions: We assure you while we are complying with all US gov't requirements, services like Google Play & security from Google Play Protect will keep functioning on your existing Huawei device,” the company said.
      "The backup plan"

While Huawei hasn’t released a statement on this, as the company’s lawyers said last week they were still looking into the implications of Trump’s new order, this may not be game over for the Chinese giant just yet.

Back in March, Huawei’s mobile chief Richard Yu Chengdong revealed his company might have a backup plan should they be banned from using Android.

“We have prepared our own operating system, if it turns out we can no longer use these systems [Android], we will be ready and have our plan B,” the Huawei official said.

“Huawei does have backup systems but only for use in extenuating circumstances. We don't expect to use them, and to be honest, we don't want to use them,” a spokesperson further added. “We fully support our partners' operating systems – we love using them and our customers love using them. Android and Windows will always remain our first choices.”

The new restriction does not affect Huawei devices sold in China, as these were offered without Google services anyway, but with alternatives developed by local companies.

    • Intel, Qualcomm Wave Goodbye to Huawei, European Partners Likely to Follow

Huawei’s largest suppliers are suspending their collaboration with the Chinese tech giant after a US government order imposing new restrictions.

Google banned Huawei from using the licensed version of Android and its proprietary services, like Gmail and YouTube, and now the Chinese company is very close to losing its biggest suppliers.

Bloomberg reveals that Intel, Qualcomm, and Broadcom are all waving goodbye to Huawei in an attempt to comply with the government order. Intel builds chips for Huawei laptops and servers.

Huawei produces its own mobile processors and modems, but it also buys tech from Qualcomm and Broadcom, two other American giants now planning to cut off their collaboration with the Chinese firm.

Nikkei writes that other suppliers are currently evaluating the impact of the new order signed by the Trump administration late last week. German chipmaker Infineon Technologies has already suspended its shipments to Huawei. Micron Technology and Western Digital took a similar decision as well, according to the same source.
"Similar trouble in Europe and Asia"

European suppliers, including here ST Microelectronics, are yet to shut down their shipments to Huawei, but on the other hand, they are evaluating the impact of the Trump order. Asia-based TSMC maintains deliveries as well, albeit it admits the decision could change in the near future.

Huawei, however, doesn’t seem to be worried, as the company has reportedly prepared for this moment by “stockpiling roughly six months to one year of key components,” as per Nikkei.

Furthermore, Huawei has recently revealed it was working on its own alternatives to Android and Windows should such a ban to use these would be imposed, yet it’s not yet known if the company is ready to make the switch to its in-house built operating systems at this point.

Huawei hasn’t commented on this new offensive against the company, but its lawyers said last week they were looking into how the Chinese tech giant would be affected by the new restrictions announced by the US.
