Campaign for a European Constitution Dear Friends, This message comes in support of an initiative organised by the Union of European Federalists and the Young European Federalists. As you are well aware, the European Union is about to be given a single currency. While the introduction of the Euro will be a great event, and one which will give Europeans unprecedented opportunities, it will at the same time render urgent the need for a proper European government and for a democratic and federal reform of the Union's institutions. On the part of the Member States of the Union there is, predictably, going to be considerable resistance to the prospect of the relinquishment of political sovereignty and, in this regard, the intervention of Europe's citizens, who have so far been substantially excluded from the process, could well prove to be decisive. Nowadays, with the instruments of information technology (and the Internet in particular) representing a new resource of incalculable potential, each and every one of us has the power to act: from our homes or our places of work, and at no cost at all, we can make our democratic demands known to those in power and establish a network of correspondents, all of whom will be invited to do the same. In this way, we can all help to increase the strength and effectiveness of a political demand. A number of campaigns in support of ideals, like that for the abolition of antipersonnel land mines, for instance, have been conducted with great success using e-mail as the chosen channel of communication. We, too, can make a major contribution to what is an even more ambitious project by making sure that this instrument is used to serve the cause of European unity and democracy, giving citizens the active role which has until now been denied to them. Through this method, the voice calling for the federal unification of Europe will gradually make itself heard further and further afield, becoming progressively stronger as the network of correspondents grows. Politicians both on a national and European level are extremely susceptible to the pressure of public opinion. It is our hope that the dimensions of our initiative will become so vast that those in power will, eventually, have no choice but to give in. What we are asking you to do is the following: send an appeal to the prime minister of your country (if you are an EU citizen) as well as to the current president of the European Council and of the European Parliament. Additionally, pass on this letter to as many of your friends, colleagues and other contacts asking them to do the same. www.Euraction.org Link: European Constitution |
