I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a quick question? There is a piece of music that I think was composed by Haydn. It is either a symphony or small string group. The defining characteristic is that it has a few "false" endings at the end. If anyone could help me with this I would appreciate in a ton. Thanks in advance, Mike.

Most probably you are referring to Joseph Haydn's String Quartet in E flat, Op. 33, No. 2, The Joke (see performance reviews here and here). There are also false endings in others of his works, for example the Symphony No. 90 (see a review).

These works are included in recordings at:

Recently I was informed that Haydn was "black". Needless to say I was astonished.
Do you know of any reliable sources on this matter?
Thank you,

Mr. Miller, there is an anecdote about Prince Esterhazy once calling Haydn blackamoor (black Moor) during a concert because of his dark complexion, maybe from smallpox.

People talk more about Beethoven having a mulatto face, but this seems to refer to his looks, rather than to his family.

For example, with a Google search you may find different opinions about these points, of course.

I can't recall the symphony #. However I have in mind one of most unusual and entertaining works of any composer in a late Haydn symphony. It had one of the last movements turning abruptly into a piano concerto. It was so advanced a composition for that time, that it could have been writen in our times.

Can anyone please help me.

Thanks!

Hi, can someone let me know if there is an online Haydn family tree?
