You might want to check out some of the articles at http://www.iinotia.com such as the Space Mining article.

You need to open your mind to the fact that we all are members of the universe. And, the universe makes us physically insignificant. But, the fact that we are an intelligent species in that vast universe means that we are likely very significant.

The most important task of our political leaders should be survival of our species. Without a doubt that means we must be able to live elsewhere - off mother Earth. The Space Mining article I mentioned above discusses an altered and terraformed Mars as our second home.

But, the fact is that eventually our species will need to find another solar system, then another galaxy and then perhaps another universe. Whether any of those things are possible is still unknown.

The key point in that Space Mining article is that every day we are failing to use our most valuable commodity - our childrens' intelligence. Instead we offer our children the option of managing manufacturing, distribution and retailing businesses. A few are offered the chance to do a small amount of science. Others become political and argue about silly topics such as that small period in time when oil is king or protecting a snail-darter.

As the article says we need to figure out how to make the increased use of our childrens' intelligence an integral part of the capitalistic system. Another article at that website talks about energy or electricity or solar, I can't remember which one, and discusses the fact that solar was and will be the primary energy supply. It points out that we, collectively, have chosen to ignore real energy costs. That's why one day we will wake up to $100 a barrel oil and we will ask ourselves why we didn't see this coming. With oil over $50 a barrel as I write this that time might be sooner than even I envision.

Anyway, you asked about "sustainability". The fact is that I too have "never been hired by a poor person" as one of the articles on that web site I mentioned said. By that I mean, when we get the economy cranking with highly paid intelligence workers then they will obviously spend money. The faster smart people spend money the more work will be created for others all over the world.

Everyone can have a good job or can support those that don't yet have a good job. Those that continue to focus on the poor, poverty, homelessness, etc., etc. are part of the problem. Instead they need to focus on finding those people work or better work. Handouts just make it too easy to not strive to improve their situation.

Instead we need to figure out how both consumers and businesses can value activities where maximum use of our childrens' intelligence is required. Since real estate is highly valued by both groups, it is obvious that when complete an Earth-like Mars would have extreme value for those groups. We just need to figure out how that outcome could be valued over time.

So, I'll ask you. What other projects could be created that share the same two characteristics: 1) use our childrens' intelligence, and
2) results are extremely valuable in the capitalistic system (the only economic system that has ever proven to be viable over time - even in China!).

Solidarity & Sustainability Newsletter

Announcement -- free, monthly research newsletter.

Solidarity & Sustainability: A Newsletter on the Socio-Ecological Impacts of Religious Patriarchy

Focus

Sustainable *Human* Development

Scope

Humanity is currently on a global journey from patriarchy to solidarity, sustainability, and sustainable human development. This project attempts to understand how to mitigate patriarchal barriers to human development and, in particular, how to overcome the enormous obstacles caused by religious patriarchy. The method is to integrate existing and emerging knowledge (empirical evidence, tradition, relevant experience, wisdom) to show that true religion should never be an obstacle to human development. The spiral method of writing is used. The "Millennium Development Goals" of the United Nations are used as a point of reference.

Greetings,

There are now 25 issues of the newsletter, "Solidarity, Sustainability, and Non-Violence" posted online.

Mission:

Violence is the main obstacle to human development. There is an intrinsic link between violence and religion, patriarchal gender violence being the most pervasive expression of religious violence. Mitigating violence therefore requires overcoming the patriarchal mindset, especially in religious institutions. The mission of this independent newsletter is to provide a digest on current research and emerging issues related to human solidarity, ecological sustainability, and both religious and secular non-violence. The United Nations' Millennium Development Goals are used as a point of reference.

More and more of us are seeing clean air, open space, and good water as our birth right. Fortunately, it doesn’t require herculean efforts if all of us chip in with even slight changes in our day-to-day lives.

Come to the Copperwiki platform

How do we lead our lives that are sustainable? How do we reduce our impact on the environment?
Here’s an open collaboration platform for people seeking choices for living a responsible life.
http://copperwiki.org/index.php/Main_Page
Anyone can come in and write, edit and be heard by those seeking to live consciously on this planet.
Community driven open collaboration

CopperWiki is a community driven open collaboration. It offers choices for living a healthy, useful and responsible life. Most of us are aware of the importance of conscious living and the urgency of making this concept a way of life. The CopperWiki world informs, encourages, and shares the best practices for living responsibly as individuals, community, society, nation and as a planet. It aims at creating awareness about existing practices and products, their benefits and harmful impact and the choices available.

Fast conductor for information

The articles in Copperwiki aim at creating awareness about existing products and practices; the impact of using/following these products/practices; the choices available; the information related to these choices – all aimed at helping the reader make an informed choice. Hence it is a fast conductor for information—which otherwise exists piecemeal at various places.

The site has a wide and varied audience, who in addition to getting to know about the harmful impact of many products, want to know how to source organically produced products – especially in India.

Editable organization

The great part is that it is an ‘editable’ organization which subscribes to the wiki philosophy of an ‘anyone can edit’ where good people, with good intent and good work prevail over the not-so-good, the not-yet-great-enough, and sometimes the downright bad ones.

A call for Socially-Responsible Banking

Like most everybody else, I'm concerned about the economic conditions in our country. This led me to start looking into "socially-responsible banking." Our economy is in no condition to nurture a "business as usual" approach. If anybody else feels the same way, check out http://www.socialinvest.org/projects/communityinvesting.cfm.
Many of those banks have been around for 35 years and are committed to communities, as well as their own bottom line. It doesn't take a great leap of imagination to see that these two concepts are NOT mutually exclusive. So, after looking over their credentials I've decided to switch my savings account over to ShoreBank (one of the better ones). Check out their High Yield Savings Account of 3.50% APY --- same as other banks. But more than that, they'll be doing something worthwhile with my money. yohttps://www.sbk.com/bins/site/templates/default.asp?area_2=pages/onlinebanki ng/hysa+main.dat&objectid=D3AF6110&ml_index=1&NC=1161X)
