More than a million people--more people than ever before--are living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. Yet every year it gets harder for people to find support, and agencies struggle to keep their programs funded. In other cities, AIDS service organizations have cut services and closed locations to keep their doors open. We don't want that to happen here. This is one of the many reasons why: Maya has two children, twelve and seven, and she lives in a small apartment. She tested positive for HIV four years ago, and recently has been diagnosed with AIDS. She works part time, which is all she can manage. Every week she receives a family grocery bag from Lifelong, full of staples like pasta and rice, proteins such as chicken or tofu, and fresh fruits and vegetables. She also receives pre-made meals she can heat up when she's too sick to cook, in the microwave Lifelong supplied. Maya is one of many people Lifelong helps every week. Her health and well being are important, not only to her, but to the two children she supports. Living with HIV is hard enough, but to do so while raising a family is even tougher. Few of us can imagine the difficulties of a life like Maya's: frequent illness, poverty, underemployment, and the challenges of raising a family. But we can all help Maya, and people like her. Supplementary support: November 2005 began to take NS Immune plus capsules, 6 capsules twice daily. Observation: After 30 days all reported opportunistic symptoms diminished Blood analysis Feb 2006: CD4+ 470 Blood analysis July 2006: CD4+ 1266 Additional observation: The individual is currently healthy, returned to normal work with no reported opportunistic infection No side effects were reported. The weeks and months that followed irrevocably shaped my view of life and the disease that threatens it. I am now a graduate student at San Francisco State University and I am conducting a research study on how HIV/AIDS diagnoses are delivered and the impact of the diagnosis.
