Commercial exploitation of forests and increase of usage of wood in modern needs caused forest unproductive. Their resources also vanished as the forests became agricultural and urban lands. Their main dependence of food on forest products became scarce led to malnutrition.
(Barter) system of exchanging their products against basic necessitates like salt, iron, cooking utensils are exploited by traders from outsiders who cheat them.
Non exploring of forest value in our life as only 3% of about 3, 00,000 plants species available to agriculture are used today. Our concentration of artificial value of forests has reduced the size.
Worlds food supply depends on about 150-200 plant species. Of those 150- 200, just 12 provide three-quarters of the worlds food.
Lack of research and development and non understanding medicinal value of forests produce as only about only 2% could be discovered.
Non recognition of tribal traditional ayurvedic medicinal knowledge. Nearly 60% of urban population takes medicines for some or other reasons as compared to 15-20% in tribal community. This is due to environmental disaster but has less affect on tribes as they live in forest in natural environment.
Also system of modern education has played very important role to ignore rural development and our old tradition and culture thus their traditional crafts are in extinction.
In order to save our historical identity and culture, rehabilitation programs for tribal population need to be instated; local governments have to take important steps like protective forestation to give habitats conducive to the tribal.

Answer:-

Because the five southern "Thai" provinces were and remained to be captured Malay soil annexed in 1902 by Siam during the Rama V era. Patani (misspelled and misprounounced by the Siamese as "Pattani), Menara (Narathiwat), Jala (Yala), Singgora (Songkhla) and Setul (Satun) were for the most part territories under the rule of the Malay Kingdom of Patani. In 1902, the Siamese abducted the last Raja of Patani, Tengku Abdul Kadir Kamaruddin, and at gunpoint aboard a gunboat forced him to abdicate and secede Patani's sovereignty to Siam. When he refused, the Raja was dragged to Bangkok and jailed and tortured under atrocious conditions. His abduction marked the end of independent Patani. Patani itself was dismembered into four weak changwats (above). The fifth Malay province, Setul (Satun) was a district of Kedah that was "given" by the British to Siam at the eleventh hour of the 1909 Anglo-Siamese Treaty to break an impasse caused by a stubborn Siamese stance.

So to answer this guy Andy's question: No. The Pattani lands encompassing the five "deep south" provinces are NOT Siamese soil. This is Malay soil - read history, look at the demographics, look-up the original place names and names of rivers, hills, mountains, lakes -- they are all Malay. The only thing "Thai" are the TV shows forced fed from Bangkok and the corrupt fascist thugs masquerading as the Thai army and police.

Your Malaysia example is flawed: The Malays are the original inhabitants. The Chinese and Indians are recent indentured undocumented coolie immigrants who were given the privilege during Merdeka 1957 to stay on in Malaya under condition of good behaviour and respect for native rights, culture, and language. That was the social contract to allow the non-Malays to stay. On the contrary, in the five southern "Thai" provinces, the ethnic-Siamese ARE the immigrants, invading and occupying Malay soil since 1902. So how can you equate the two circumstances ? Now you know the relevance of history ? Ignore history and your dumbness will percolate in these types of forum.

BTW, "Thai" is a recent creation -- a 1932 concoction by Field Marshal Phibun Songkhram to annihilate the Malays, Chinese (yup, these people were once 30% of Siam's population), Lao, Khmer, Shan, Mon, etc. and subsume them under an ethnic-Siamese identity and consciousness. In the 1930s, anyone speaking Chinese in Bangkok would be walloped on the head by a 10-foot bamboo stick by Phibun's culture police. At least, these Chinese were treated more humanely in Malaysia, where even today their dialects and culture survive almost unscathe.

As long as the Siamese continue to occupy the Malay lands in the five captive southern provinces, peace will be elusive.

The likes of "Andy" would be well-advised to understand the REAL issues and not be caught by superficial perceptions from faraway.

No one can argue with your historical facts.Similarly, the English and Europeans stole North America from the original inhabitants. The British traded cheap whisky for almost the entire Australia to set up a penal colony.The Dutch, Belgians, French with their superior weaponry plundered Africa and practically left the country in ruins after all the wealth had been taken.The Spanish did likewise in the Phillipines.
With treachery, massacres, ethnic cleansing far worse than what the Malays suffered.And some even after 1902.
I hope you get my point, sir. These colonial bastards won't even think of compensating their victims in any way.Maybe in certain cases they might give the corrupt leaders of their colony some branded whisky.
So do you really expect the Southern Thailand problem to be any different.
The way I see it the fault lies more on your kins in the South. First your local leaders have to solve your corrupt and contended way of life which at the moment suits the masters.
If your leaders can mobilise a miillion of the estimated 5 million Malays to stage a peaceful rally like the one led by Mahatma Gandhi and chose an auspicious date to petition the honourable Thai King, the chances of your grievences be heard are there.We all know that King Bhumipol is revered by all, including the Malays.What have your people got to lose? Besides a little hard work and honest leadership.Get your reps. working on it.Like your brothers in the South, your kinfolk are too contended.Don't expect Bhumiputra status in this ethnic Chinese-Thai run country.
In case your don't realise it even the orignial natives, from Issan to Hatyai share the same predicament as the Malays in the South.Against the hard working and ever ambitious Chinese Thai none of you stand a chance.And this is only the beginning.

There is no other way out. The Malays have no chance against the might of the Thai forces. So don't kid yourself and your fellow Malays.Your only alternative is to co-exist with your Siamese brothers.You quoted history well.And I'm sure you know the histories of the minorities and poor who went up against the rich and poweful.
Can you suggest another workable alternative?

If there were more Nation readers of your class and also Phaya Rittiphakdi Thibodi with his truly impeccable Answer then it would be a wonderful Thai poll

It is sad to see how dangerously low IQs of people are with their negative racist incitement and agitation of a sensitive situation, it does however go to show that alot of education is needed in order to remove this powerful racial hatred.

Congratulations gentlemen on Opinion and Analysis that is much clearer and to the point than the Nation editorial, or the editorial of the Bangkok Post
