close down the BPRC
Please send a letter to Maria v/d Hoeven, responsible of the BPRC- Biomedical Primate Research Centre in Rijswijk, the Netherlands.

Write to: A: info@minocw.nl
CC: Lies-Lies-Lies@VivisectionSucks.com, iniziative@oltrelaspecie.org

Objet: T.a.v. mevr. Maria van der Hoeven

Dear Maria v/d Hoeven,

With absolute horror I heard about the escape of two Rhesus macaques from the BPRC- Biomedical Primate Research Centre in Rijswijk, the Netherlands.

Because of this incident I have a couple of questions:

- How is it possible that two monkeys can escape from the largest primate center of Europe? Doesn't this show the incapability of the BPRC housing any animals and therefore also taking care of any animals?

- Were the two monkeys infected with a disease? If so, which disease and did they form any threat to the health of humans?

- Can you inform me about the welfare of the caught monkeys? I have no doubt that hunting down the animals and then tranquilise them with a dart, seriously distresses the animals! Will these monkeys get extra care? If so, please inform me about what extra care these poor animals will get then.

- It's not the first time animals escape from the BPRC. We can only wait till a monkey which is infected with a very dangerous disease escapes and spreads this disease among the Dutch population. Is it not so that you can only guarantee the safety of the animals of the BPRC and the citizens of Rijswijk in particular and the Netherlands as a whole by closing down the BPRC in Rijswijk?

Because of yet another misstep of the BPRC in a very short time (think of the death of Walter and Coen last year....!) I urge you to immediatly close down the BPRC and release all animals to Stichting AAP or another sanctuary of my liking!

It's simply criminal that 1600 animals are still being used in medieoval experiments. Please send me a personal reaction a.s.a.p.

Yours truly,

Hey everyone. I hope everyone is as concerned about the murderous torture of animals as I am. If you want to make a difference, please visit www.care2.com and sign the petitions to protect animals from slaughter and fur trade. Please contribute as much as possible, it doesn't even cost a cent to sign your name to save a life. Tell your friends, and hopefully we can save the many species of animals that will be extinct in no time if man goes on killing.

If you don't know where the meat came from that's sitting on your plate, are you sure you really want to eat it?

PLEASE CROSSPOST

From the Sled Dog Action Coalition, http://www.helpsleddogs.org

Rachael Scdoris, the legally blind woman who raced in the 2005 Iditarod, will be grand marshal of the Starlight Parade presented by Southwest Airlines, according to an announcement made by the Portland Rose Festival. People who participate in Iditarod brutalities don't deserve honors.

Four dogs died in the 2005 Iditarod and countless others became sick and were injured. Scdoris' own dogs caught a virus with accompanying diarrhea and refused to eat.

On average, 53 percent of the dogs who start the race do not make it across the finish line. According to a report published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, of those who do cross, 81 percent have lung damage. A report published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine said that 61 percent of the dogs who finish the Iditarod have ulcers versus zero percent pre-race.

Ask the Portland Rose Festival and Southwest Airlines to pick another parade marshal.

EMAIL: info@rosefestival.org, editors@spiritmag.com, kim.wren@wnco.com, dan.mckee@wnco.com

SAMPLE LETTER TO PERSONALIZE:

Dear Mr. Buttice, Ms. Bladow and Mr. Kelly:

I understand the Starlight Parade presented by Southwest Airlines will feature Rachael Scdoris, the legally blind woman who participated in the Iditarod. By selecting Scdoris, you are supporting and promoting this horrific race and the many evils associated with it. Please find another grand marshal for the Starlight Parade.

In the Iditarod, dogs are forced to run 1,150 miles, which is the approximate distance between Portland and Bismarck, ND, over a grueling terrain in 8 to 15 days. USA Today sports columnist Jon Saraceno called the Iditarod "a travesty of grueling proportions" and "Ihurtadog." Fox sportscaster Jim Rome called it "I-killed-a-dog." Orlando Sentinel sports columnist George Diaz said the race is "an illegal sweatshop for dogs." USA Today business columnist Bruce Horovitz said the race is a "public-relations minefield."

Please visit the Sled Dog Action Coalition website http://www.helpsleddogs.org and be sure to read the quotes on http://www.helpsleddogs.org/remarks.htm . All the material on the site is true and verifiable.

At least 126 dogs have died in the Iditarod, including four who died in 2005 race. There is no official count of dog deaths available for the race's early years. Here's a short list of what happens to the dogs during the race: death, paralysis, penile frostbite, bleeding ulcers, broken bones, pneumonia, ruptured discs, hypothermia, broken teeth, viral diseases, torn footpads and lung damage.

Tom Classen, retired Air Force colonel and Alaskan resident for over 40
years, tells us that the dogs are beaten into submission:

"They've had the hell beaten out of them." "You don't just whisper into their ears, 'OK, stand there until I tell you to run like the devil.' They understand one thing: a beating. These dogs are beaten into submission the same way elephants are trained for a circus. The mushers will deny it. And you know what? They are all lying." -USA Today, March 3, 2000 in Jon Saraceno's column

Mushers believe in "culling" or killing unwanted dogs, including puppies. Many dogs who are permanently disabled in the Iditarod, or who are unwanted for any reason, including those who have outlived their usefulness are killed with a shot to the head, dragged or clubbed to death. Please stop supporting and promoting this barbaric race. Please do not honor Scdoris by having her as your grand marshal.

Sincerely,

EMAIL ALL IDITAROD SUPPORTERS: http://www.helpsleddogs.org/sponsors.htm

I'm frankly shocked and horrified that anyone could do this to a blind and deaf dog. It's tragic. I hope this man suffers greatly for what he's done. I urge everyone to contact Putnam Valley -- it's law enforcment and DA -- to push for a the max sentence for this scumbag.

Here's the article:

Man charged in death of old dog
By BARBARA LIVINGSTON NACKMAN
THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original publication: June 7, 2005)

PUTNAM VALLEY — A 40-year-old Putnam Valley man is due in Town Court on Thursday to answer a felony charge of animal cruelty after he was accused of kicking his neighbor's 15-year-old blind and deaf dog so severely that it later died.

Roxi, a 45-pound German shepherd mixed breed, wandered into Frank Aquino's yard during a Memorial Day barbeque, police said. The dog died a few hours after the attack.

A witness said Aquino had "walked over to the dog and kicked (it) like a football" in the abdomen, said Capt. William McNamara of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

The arthritic dog had staggered to another neighbor's yard and died under a tree, where owners Lisa and William Sampson found their beloved pet.

They had no idea what had happened to their dog until Alfred Pizzuto, the neighbor who witnessed the incident, realized this was the Sampsons' dog, and the story came together.

"To viciously kick a dog is beyond words," said Lisa Sampson, 39. "She was such a sweet animal. We'd come in the door and her tail would be wagging. Now she is gone, and in such a horrible way."

Pizzuto, a guest at the barbeque, told police he and his wife, Michelle, were shocked and left Aquino's house, saying they didn't want to socialize with someone who did such a thing.

They weren't familiar with the dog and did not know where it went after the injury.

After the attack, Pizzuto said "the dog tumbled several times" and "then slowly got up and walked away," according to the police report. Deputy John Wynne handled the investigation and arrested Aquino on Sunday evening. He was charged aggravated cruelty to an animal.

Attempts to reach Aquino and Pizzuto yesterday were not successful.

In the past four years, there have been some striking cases of animal abuse in the region.

Putnam Valley Dog Control Officer Patricia Smith said it was vital that Pizzuto filed a complaint.

"You can't let people get away with this," she said. "If this is what he does to a neighbor's dog, what does he do to strays? How does he treat people?"

She said she periodically gets calls of inhumane treatment of animals but said people too often don't want to file a formal complaint.

Lisa Sampson said she was particularly shocked by the harm done to the dog she had raised since it was a puppy because she and Aquino both attended Mahopac High School together and grew up in the neighborhood. Lisa, whose maiden name was Eichen, was raised in her current house on Somerset Lane, which she and her husband, Bill, bought from her parents.

Aquino grew up in a house down the block, where his parents still live, and now lives across Somerset Lane from the Sampsons.

"We knew each other. If he had a problem, he could have come to me," she said.

She said she walked Roxi on a leash and since the birth of her son, Dylan, seven months ago, she got into a routine of walking Roxi with the stroller a few times a day. On Memorial Day, she said, Roxi was running on another neighbor's lawn and got out of sight, probably attracted by all the outdoor cooking smells.

The incident is reported to have happened about 4 p.m. Sampson said she found Roxi about 6:30 p.m.

Aquino was arraigned Sunday evening by Town Justice Louis DiCarlo. He was released without bail, but the judge issued temporary protective orders directing Aquino to stay away from the Pizzutos and the Sampsons.

Aquino entered a not-guilty plea, court personnel said. If convicted, he could face up to two years in jail and a maximum $5,000 fine.

It has come to my attention that the worst that the internet has to offer has taken place . Now it is possible to not only gamble over the internet, which is bad enough in itself, but to gamble on cockfighting as well. The website in question, www.pinoy-sabong.com allows live streaming video & gambling on the most cruel of sports, cockfighting. All one needs to become enmeshed in the sordid world of gambling is a valid credit card. The site staes you must be 18 years of age, but how can they promise that children will not be able to partake of this awful business?

Because there are no laws to keep egg-laying hens from being tortured in battery-cages a regional grocery chain is being attacked for its inhumane practices. Wegmans owns an egg farm in Wolcott, NY. While it is true their practices are not illegal, the chickens are suffering.

In the summer of 2004, a group of three people broke into the farm that Wegmans would not allow tours of. They recorded horrible pictures of dead as well as alive chickens in these battery-cages. Some had managed to escape only to die in the manure pits. Wegmans is pressing charges against these three now that the video has been released for the public to view. The charges include felony burglary because some dying chickens were taken from the facility to save their lives. After the break-ins, an investigation of the farm by the Wayne County district attorney’s office and the New York State Police concluded that there was no illegal animal abuse.

The standards for laying hens in the industry are horrific. In a book by Eric Marcus, Meat Market, about the industry, he talks of the beak searing, tight confinement of less then an 8 ½-by-11 inch sheet of paper, high rates of injury and mortality, and lack of individual veterinary care. He says, “There is no doubt in my mind that a bite of an egg involves more suffering than a bite of hamburger or bacon.”

Many in the American public do not want to see the animals we eat mistreated, if not for concern of the animals then because of our health. It took mad cow disease to get regulations passed keeping sick animals from being dragged to slaughter. Will it mean the public’s health before we stop marketing eggs that come from stressed and dying birds?

I urge you today to do all you can to change the U.S. Department of Agriculture standards for animal welfare. The battery-cage practice should be illegal. Cases like the one involving Wegmans should not have boiled down to an argument between the company and the public. The website www.WegmansCruelty.com should not exist because the battery-cage should not exist.

Thank you for your consideration.
