| Touch Africa Network (TAN) December work camp will be held at Mavuno women’s group project site in chelani village on the shores of the Indian Ocean, Malindi District, Coast province of Kenya from the 15th of December 2008 to 4th January 2009. Mavuno Women’s Group is a self help group (SHG) engaged in income generating activities and social initiatives such as creating awareness on Hiv/Aids through dances and plays. It was started in 2001 with a membership of only 10 women. The group has since grown to a membership of 42 with the majority being widows. The group’s income generating activities involves bead works, weaving and handcrafts which they sell to tourists at the local market. Volunteers will be accommodated in a nearby school building. The following are some of the work scheduled to be undertaken in the work camp; - 1) Join the women in making bead works, weaving and hand crafts. 2) Join the group in rehearsing their plays and dances which will be performed in the local churches and market. 3) Plant trees around the church (this is a TAN 'must do' activity in all camps). 4) Organize the women in strengthening there micro saving and credit project and mobilize local community members to join the scheme. 5) Help the Local church organize a Christmas party for the poor in the area.. 6) Volunteer in nearby community health center. 7) Join the community in a beach clean up campaign. On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International airport (JKIA) you will be met by TAN staff. Their will be an orientation on 14TH December 2008 at TAN offices in Nairobi. Therefore volunteers are advised to make plans to arrive before this date. It is a MUST to participate in the work camp orientation on the 14th in Nairobi. Participants will leave for the work camp on 15th December 2008 early in the morning. It’s about 9 hour’s journey to Malindi. Participation Fee; you will be required to pay a participation fee of 200 Euros and an additional 100 Euros which cover airport transfers, transport to the project and orientation in Nairobi. Food and accommodation for period of project, accommodation in Nairobi for two days before and after work camp is covered in the participation fee. Volunteers will be issued with a certificate after the work camp. Volunteers are advice to carry sleeping bags, sleeping mats, a torch, a mosquito net/repellents, entertainment and cultural effects from their country. One must be 18 years old or older to participate in the work camp. Anyone under this age must have written consent from parent of guardian. Volunteers travelling with their children are advised to inform us before hand so that arrangements can be made to facilitate them.
